Do Pool Test Strips or Test Kits Expire?

To keep your pool water safe, clean and comfortable for swimming, it’s important to regularly test the water.

Healthy water will also help to control algae growth and reduce the risk of bacteria or diseases.

Pool owners use test strips or test kits to check their pool water, but they do have a limited shelf life which will affect the accuracy of results.

What Do Pool Test Strips & Test Kits Measure?

Pool test kits or test strips are used to check the chemistry of your pool water and both have their own advantages.

Test Strips

Test strips are pre-coated with reagents that change colour depending on chemicals in the water.

Test strips are easy and convenient to use and can check for free chlorine, total chlorine, pH, alkalinity, total hardness and stabiliser (CYA).

The reagents on the strips will degrade over time, especially if they’re exposed to air, sunlight or moisture.

Most strips have an expiration date printed on the packaging, even if the strips look ok, don’t use them after this date.

Test Kits

With test kits, reagents are added to a water sample, then colours are compared to a comparison chart to determine chemical readings.

Test kits are handy for checking extra parameters such as phosphates or metals.

The reagents in test kits will lose their effectiveness as they age. Don’t use them after their expiration date, as the results are no longer reliable.

Both testing options will help you to maintain the right chemical balance in your pool water.

How Does Expiration Affect Accuracy?

The accuracy of your pool testing is really important for maintaining proper water chemistry.

If you use expired test strips or reagents, you could get misleading results.

Incorrect Chlorine Levels

If your chlorine levels aren’t between 1.0 to 3.0 parts per million (ppm), your pool might not be disinfected properly or could cause sore eyes and skin irritation.

pH Imbalance

Inaccurate pH readings can cause discomfort for swimmers and damage pool equipment and surfaces.

Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.8.

Alkalinity

Keeping alkalinity within the range of 80-120 ppm will help to minimise pH fluctuations.

When alkalinity is too low it can damage pool surfaces and equipment or if too high can cause cloudy water and make it difficult for chlorine to work properly.

Calcium Hardness

Calcium hardness should be between 80 and 500 ppm to prevent scaling and corrosion.

Stabiliser (CYA)

Keep the stabiliser levels between 20 and 40 ppm to protect chlorine being degraded by sunlight.

Stabiliser is not required for indoor pools.

Chemical Imbalance

Incorrect test results can lead to improper chemical adjustments, potentially affecting the water quality.

About Us

We are a dedicated team of pool professions who have been looking after customers' pools for more than 15 years. Currently we have just over 800 pools we regularly maintain and each year we do approximately 500 pool leak detections & repairs. Several years ago, because we couldn't buy software that we needed to calculate chemicals, along with costs, automatic invoicing, payment reminders, scheduling and reports, we decided to custom write our own software. The aim was to be able to record any work done or goods sold and have it easy for staff to finalise costs for their visits with a few simple clicks. We soon realised that the software being created wouldn't just be needed in our business, but it would suit every pool business. This was a great concept for pool businesses, but didn't help the home user who looks after their pool themselves. We then decided to create separate software to cater for the home market and modify by removing invoicing, payments, etc. For several years, each time one of our technicians visited a customer’s pool, they tested the customer's pool with a photometer (high-end chemical reader) and also tested the same water with a 4-Pad and 6-Pad test-strip. Our programmers have calibrated the inputs so that now our test-strip results match high-end photometer readings. Our growth in business has been fast to date, because our company philosophy is that we understand the longevity value of a client. Our long term ambitions are to become a household name internationally. We aim to ensure your family can relax and make the most of your pool all year round.

Application Store means the digital distribution service operated and developed by Apple Inc. (Apple App Store) or Google Inc. (Google Play Store) in which the Application has been downloaded. Account means a unique account created for You to access our Service or parts of our Service. At the end of each period, Your Subscription will automatically renew under the exact same conditions unless You cancel it or the Company cancels it. Subscription Cancellations You may cancel Your Subscription renewal either through Your My Account settings page or by contacting the Company. One month’s notice is required for cancellation before the end of Your current Subscription term. You will not receive a refund for the fees You already paid for Your current Subscription period and You will be able to access the Service until the end of Your current Subscription period. Billing You shall provide the Company with accurate and complete billing information including full name, address, state, postal / zip code, mobile number, and valid payment method information. Should automatic billing fail to occur for any reason, the Company will issue an electronic invoice indicating that you must proceed manually, within a certain deadline date, with the full payment corresponding to the billing period as indicated on the invoice. Fee Changes The Company, in its sole discretion and at any time, may modify the Subscription fees. Any Subscription fee change will become effective at the end of the then-current Subscription period. Current Subscription fee costs are accessible at https://poolwater-pro.com and are also subject to variations in US dollar exchange rate, which are updated weekly. Your continued use of the Service after the Subscription fee change comes into effect constitutes Your agreement to pay the modified Subscription fee amount. Refunds Except when required by law, paid Subscription fees are non-refundable. Certain refund requests for Subscriptions may be considered by the Company on a case-by-case basis and granted at the sole discretion of the Company. Free Trial The Company may, at its sole discretion, offer a Subscription with a Free Trial for a limited period of time. You may be required to enter Your billing information in order to sign up for the Free Trial. If You do enter Your billing information when signing up for a Free Trial, You will not be charged by the Company until the Free Trial has expired. On the last day of the Free Trial period, unless You cancelled Your Subscription, You will be automatically charged the applicable Subscription fees for the type of Subscription You have selected.
